From humble pastry to livelihood source
When you think of an empanada, what do you think of? A fruit-filled pastry for dessert or a savory meat pie for dinner? Depending on where you are, what flour the pastry is made of is just as varied as it's fillings. The popularity of the dish makes it a perfect option for starting a business. In Ecuador, Maria used part of her family’s Unbound benefits to buy supplies to start selling empanadas in her neighborhood. When she started, she was only making 30 empanadas a day and is now getting orders for more than 140 each day! Next step? She hopes to open a family restaurant.
