A Sweet Tradition

Throughout Latin America, confectioners like Marcelina make candy the old-fashioned way, with patience and love.

Preparing the Latin American candy called melcocha is quite the process, but Marcelina is an expert. As a young girl, she learned the art of making candy from her grandparents. She’s one of only six people that makes melcocha in her community, and she sells it at festivals and celebrations. A mother of seven, Marcelina is grateful for the sponsorship of her youngest child, which gives her the opportunity to provide for her family. Through the Unbound program, she was able to acquire fruit trees that help to flavor her candies.

Watch as Marcelina creates her delicious treat the traditional way!
